The Bridge Program for Adults in Recovery

The Hope Coalition Bridge Program mobilizes the local healthcare system in response to the opioid crisis with compassion, evidence-based care, and lived experience.

The program focuses on connecting those struggling with addiction on the PATHS Unit (Psychiatric Addiction Therapeutic Healing Service) and Emergency Departments with recovery services to reduce stigma, increase access to effective treatment, and save lives.

Through direct hospital engagement and community connection, the Bridge Program helps individuals begin and sustain recovery.

Our Purpose

The Bridge Program exists to reduce overdose deaths, improve treatment access, and ensure people receive meaningful support after a hospital visit. By activating proven addiction care models and peer support, we help bridge the gap between crisis care  and long-term recovery.

Community Need

Henderson County has been identified as an opioid high-risk county. Despite this designation, recent data show encouraging progress. Overdose deaths declined by twenty-six percent in 2024. Treatment service utilization increased by three percent, with more than six hundred uninsured residents receiving care for opioid use disorder. Emergency Department visit rates rose slightly, reflecting improved access to life-saving interventions.

These trends demonstrate that education, treatment access, and coordinated care are making a measurable difference.

How the Bridge Program Works

Support happens in stages that center around the individual. Peer support specialists with lived experience meet patients in the hospital and offer immediate connection and understanding. After discharge, ongoing support helps individuals engage with the recovery community and navigate next steps. Participants are connected to effective care options such as MAT (Medication-Assisted Treatment), behavioral health services, and community-based support.

Our Focus On

Education

Peer Navigators build strong relationships within hospital settings while raising awareness about substance use disorder and evidence-based treatment. Education reduces stigma and empowers both patients and providers.

Culture and Harm Reduction

We promote accurate, compassionate conversations about substance use and substance use disorder. We recognize that substance use exists on a spectrum that ranges from non-use (abstinence), beneficial use, lower-risk use, and addiction. A harm reduction approach improves trust, reduces barriers to care, and supports long-term wellness regardless of the relationship with substances.

Community Connection

Recovery does not happen in isolation. The Bridge Program connects participants to resources upon their release from the hospital. Individual needs are addressed with participants to build a plan to bolster their recovery.

Our Team

Our North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialists (NCCPSS) bring professional training and personal experience to every interaction. Their work is grounded in compassion, dignity, and the belief that recovery is possible for everyone. We focus on choice and self-determination as important components in everyone’s recovery. In a peer support relationship, each person contributes, learning from one another. Peer Support is built on mutual respect.

We are ready to assist you.
